The Apartment Design Guide (ADG) - is it a blessing or a curse?
Date - 18 September 2018
Venue - Bartier Perry
PIA Bartier Perry Insight Series
In this session, Sydney’s leading consultants Michael Harrison - Urban Design & Director, Architectus and Steve Kennedy – Partner, Kennedy Associates Architects provide their opinions on the ADG with a particular emphasis on whether it is achieving the desired goals of good apartment design that respond appropriately to the character of the area, landscape setting and surrounding built form. Our speakers will also consider whether the design standards for residential apartments are appropriate.
Guest speakers
Michael Harrison - Urban Design & Director, Architectus
An old hand at urban design and planning, Michael has been a Director with Architectus for many years including a 4 year secondment with the City of Sydney Council as City Strategy and Design Director 2007-11. Having been an expert Urban design witness in over 100 court cases, mostly higher density residential, and a primary author of many urban design, master planning and strategic planning studies for private industry, local and state Government, Michael knows many of the issues in dealing with the NSW Apartment Design Guide and its predecessor the RFDC. Of course, it is an excellent document, not without some oddities, but it is the way people interpret it that drive him crazy and the rules that were never meant to be set in stone regardless of the situation.
Steve Kennedy – Partner, Kennedy Associates Architects
Steve Kennedy is a partner of Kennedy Associates Architects, an architectural and urban design practice based in Annandale, Sydney, with a focus on urban design and public, community and residential architecture. Steve has 35 years experience as an architect and urban designer and formed Kennedy Associates in 1994. Steve provides urban design and architectural consultant services to both local and state government and has been a member of numerous working groups, advisory boards, design excellence panels, design review panels and independent hearing and assessment panels for over 15 years.
