John began his legal career with Bartier Perry & Purcell in the 1960s before leaving to co-found Hegarty & Elmgreen, a boutique commercial property and commercial litigation law firm. He merged this practice back into Bartier Perry in 2013, bringing many longstanding clients with him including major property developers.

John has wide experience over a long period in a number of areas of practice, particularly negotiating and finalising complex commercial property transactions. He combines a deep knowledge of property and planning law with a practical “can do” approach - something necessary in his field of expertise.

Career highlights

  • Advising on the development of 163 Castlereagh Street, Sydney (ANZ Tower Building). Involved from the project inception to finalisation, including advising on site acquisition (which involved multiple purchases), the development process and negotiating long-term leases to major tenants. It also included advising on the subsequent on-sale of the total project on completion.

  • Acting as lead lawyer in a complex and major undertaking for the redevelopment of a large site near Sydney Airport. This included advising on relocating and constructing a Championship Golf Course, parklands and recreational facilities, as well as a significant commercial and residential development.

  • Negotiating the acquisition from various government bodies and private owners of a large tract of land near central Sydney for remediation and redevelopment as an office park.

  • Advising on a licensing agreement from an inventor to an international company for the marketing and exploitation of the invention.

  • Acting as general counsel to a number of high net worth individuals on their family and business transactions and helping them solve business disputes through litigation and alternative dispute resolution.
